Bruno ARCARI

As Italian champion and a bronze medallist in the 1963 European Championships, Bruno Arcari went to the Tokyo Olympic Games with high hopes. His Games would last less than five minutes as an injury ruled him out of his opening contest. Immediately turning professional he proceeded to lose his pro debut again by injury but then went on a run of victories that earned him a shot at the Italian light-welterweight title. It was another injury that cost him the title on his first attempt but he defeated Massimo Consalati in a rematch for the title in December 1966. The European title followed in 1968 and then in 1970 he defeated Pedro Adigue of the Philippines to become WBC world light-welterweight champion. Arcari held the title for four years before weight problems forced a move into the welterweight division. Although he fought on for another four years and did not lose another fight he never again fought for a title and retired in 1978. His professional career ended with 70 victories and a draw from his 73 fights. He remained in the world of boxing and managed some of Italy’s top professional fighters
