Biography

Cullmann was called “the fastest gem cutter in the world,” as this was his profession. He was German Champion in the 50 metres indoor in 1960, and 60 metres indoor one year later. He also won a 1960 national title in the 4 x 100 relay, and was runner-up in the 100 the same year. As a member of the German 1960 Olympic gold medal winning 4x100 relay he led off the team to two world records, recording 39.66 and 39.61. The same year he was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf. His brother Hans was a middle distance runner. Bernd should not be confused with football player Bernd Cullmann who played at 1. FC Köln (Cologne), and was active from 1970 - 1984.
