Biography

Barbara Göbel won the bronze medal in the 200m breaststroke at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. This was the first Olympic medal for a sportsperson from Jena. In 1961, she set a world record in the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:18.2. In 1962, Göbel won the European Championships with the East German medley relay in a world record time of 4:40.1, and the team was then elected Sports Team of the Year. Due to a meniscus injury in her knee, she failed to qualify for the 1964 Tokyo Games. Göbel married water polo player Siegfried Ballerstedt and became a graduated sports teacher.
