After finishing fourth in the steeplechase and fifth in the marathon at the 1900 Paris Olympics, Arthur Newton fared much better at the 1904 St. Louis Games. He took the bronze medal in both the steeplechase and the marathon and led the New York AC team to a one-point victory over the Chicago AA in the 4-mile team race. Newton also won the AAU five-mile title in 1900, the steeplechase in 1902 and the AAU junior mile in 1900. His other podium finishes at the AAU were second in the 1900 steeplechase and third in the 1902 mile. Newton was born in Vermont, but moved to New York in 1899. He had a long career in the automobile industry, eventually becoming president of the Glidden Buick Company.
