Biography

Annie Speirs was one of the pioneering British female swimmers who represented their country for the first time at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm. The day after celebrating her 23rd birthday, Speirs of the Liverpool Ladies SC, won a gold medal in the relay in world record time. She also finished fifth in the individual 100 metres freestyle. Annie married Charles Coombe in 1922 but died in her native Liverpool in 1926 aged 37, and just three years after giving birth to her only son, Charles, Junior.
