Biography

Alex Stewart competed at the 1984 Olympics, losing in the second round of the heavyweight division, one year before he had won a bronze medal at the 1983 Pan American Games. He turned professional in 1986, and won his first 24 bouts by knockout. This led to a bout against Evander Holyfield but Holyfield won by TKO, in a fight for the WBA Continental Americas title. Stewart fought many top heavyweights during his career, including George Foreman, Mike Tyson, Michael Moorer, and Oleg Maskayev. Stewart fought Foreman in April 1992, losing a narrow majority decision. Stewart fought as a professional until 1999, retiring with a record of 43 wins (40 KOs) and 10 losses (7 by KOs). After retiring from boxing he worked in New York as a driver for a liquor distributor and then in a factory making boxes for the same company.
