Biography

Alan was primarily a distance swimmer, winning a gold medal in the 1,500 freestyle at the 1959 Pan American Games, the same year he won the AAU title at that distance. In 1960 he won the AAU indoors 400 freestyle. Also in 1960, Somers helped a US team set a world record of 8:17.0 for the 4x200 freestyle relay. Somers swam for Indiana University and was Big 10 champion in the 1,500 metres / 1,650 yards in 1961-63. He then attended medical school, graduating from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1968, and later practiced neurology for many years.
