The University of Oklahoma’s Wayne Wells wrestled at the 1968 Olympics and finished fourth. But in the next four years he became one of the world’s greatest wrestlers. In the interim he won a Pan-American Games gold medal, two AAU titles, three U.S. Wrestling Federation championships, finished second at the 1969 World Championships, and won the 1970 World Championship. Thus he was a favorite at the 1972 München Olympics and he came through as expected to win gold. Wells graduated from college in 1968 and accomplished most of the above while a law student at the University of Oklahoma. He later became a practicing attorney.
