Biografie

In the absence of Anatoly Starostin, who tested positive for doping in 1986, Vaho Iagorashvili rose to be the top Soviet modern pentathlete at the end of 1980s. Like many other Soviet athletes, whose career continued after the fall of Soviet Union, Iagorashvili represented many nations during his sporting career. As a competitor for the Soviet Union, Iagorashvili won a bronze at the 1988 Olympic Games, was a World team champion in 1990 and won team silver and relay bronze at the 1989 World Championships. Iagorashvili also won three European titles – in 1989 in individual and team event and in 1987 in team event, taking also individual bronze in 1987. After the fall of Soviet Union, Iagorashvili represented his birth country of Georgia, before marrying US modern pentathlete Mary Beth Larsen in 1996 and gaining US citizenship. Later representing the United States, Iagorashvili won world relay titles in 1997 and 2000, individual silver at the 1998 World Championships, relay silver in 2004 and relay bronze in 1999. Iagorashvili currently owns the Penta Fencing Club in Wilmington, Massachusetts.
