But for the flu, Tim Brown would have perished with the US figure skating team in the crash of Sabena 548 outside Brussels, as it was traveling to the 1961 World Championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Brown was second in the US Championships from 1957-60, and placed third in 1961, qualifying for the World Championships. He was a three-time World medalist, placing second in 1957-58 and third in 1959. But illness prevented him from going to the 1961 Worlds, saving his life. Brown attended U Cal Berkeley, earning a masters’ degree in zoology. He later attended medical school and practiced medicine.
