Swapnil Kusale etched his name in history as the first Indian shooter to clinch a medal in the 50m rifle 3 positions event at the Olympics after securing a bronze at Paris 2024.
His achievement added to India’s tally in Olympic rifle shooting, following Abhinav Bindra’s gold in the men’s 10m air rifle at Beijing 2008 and Gagan Narang's bronze in the same event at London 2012.
“This medal means a lot," Kusale said. "It is not a gold, but I am pleased I got a medal. To get an Olympic medal is a dream."
Swapnil Kusale was born on August 6, 1995, in Pune, into a family rooted in agriculture. In 2009, his father Suresh, a village school teacher, recognised his potential and enrolled him in Krida Prabodhini, Maharashtra government's premier sports programme. After a year of rigorous physical training, Swapnil had to select a sport to specialise in, and he chose shooting.
It wasn't long before Swapnil found success in his shooting career. At the 2015 Asian Shooting Championships in Kuwait, he won the gold medal in the 50m rifle prone event in the junior category. His winning streak that year continued at the 59th National Shooting Championship in Tughlakabad, where he bested seasoned shooters, including Olympic medallist Gagan Narang and Chain Singh, to claim victory in the 50m rifle prone event.
