Biografie

At the age of 19, Sverre Stallvik won the Regional Championships for juniors in Sør-Trøndelag, one of the strongest ski jumping regions of Norway. In his first senior year (1948), he finished eighth in the National Championships. His steady progress continued in 1949, placing fourth in Holmenkollen and seventh in the National Championships. His international breakthrough came in 1951, when he won the Svenska Skidspelen in Falun. In 1953 he showed his ability in major events, finishing second at Holmenkollen and Svenska Skidspelen, and winning a bronze medal at the National Championships. He qualified for the Norwegian team for the World Championships in Falun 1954, but placed only a disappointing 17th.

In 1955 he won his only national title in Voss, and was among the six ski jumpers selected for the 1956 Winter Olympics. He was a substitute for the jumping competition, but defending champion Arnfinn Bergmann fell ill, and on short notice Stallvik was put on the four-man Norwegian team. He ended in ninth place, best of the Norwegian jumpers, in a very disappointing Olympic competition for Norway, which had taken the gold medal at all six earlier ski jumping Olympic competitions. The salesman from Trondheim continued to compete, ending his career after the 1958 season. He was also a decent football player for FK Kvik, the oldest football club in Trondheim.
