Biografie

After winning the 1972 French amateur road race title, Raymond Martin failed to finish the 1972 Olympic road race but had a long career in the professional peleton. Martin turned professional after the München Olympics and competed through 1983. His greatest professional triumph came at the 1980 Tour de France when he made the podium, placing third, and winning the polka dot jersey that year as the best mountain climber. Martin competed at the Tour every year from 1975-83 (also in 1973), placing fourth in 1983 and eighth in 1982 as well. In 1980 he won the 13th stage, his only stage victory in the Tour de France. His professional victories included the 1974 Grand Prix de Ouest-France, the 1975 and 1979 Paris-Camembert race, the mountain jersey at the 1977 Tour de Romandie, the 1978 Grand Prix de Plumelec-Morbihan, and the 1980 Trophée des Grimpeurs-Polymultipliée.
