In the 1980s Yomi Bankole became one of the top table tennis players in Africa, ranking second on the continent and placing second to Atanda Musa at the 1984 Asoju Oba Tournament. Bankole eventually won two African Championships but, in 2004, was convicted of armed robbery and spent four years in prison. Upon his release he vowed to return to the sport and continue playing for the rest of his life. He was able to win the Odumbaku Cup in 2008, but died fairly young at age 52.
