Kim ZMESKAL

Kim Zmeskal won the US Junior Championship in 1989 and then won the Senior title three years consecutively (1990-92). In 1991 she became the first American to win the World all-around title, adding silver with the team, a bronze on floor, and recording a perfect 10.0 mark on the vault. From 1989-92 she won multiple international titles and went to Barcelona as a favorite for the all-around gold, but struggled there and finished 10th. Zmeskal won international all-arounds at the 1990 McDonald’s Americas Cup, the 1990-91 McDonald’s International Mixed Pairs (with Lance Ringnald), the 1990 McDonald’s Challenge against the Soviet Union, the 1989 Swiss Cup Mixed Pairs (with Ringnald), and the 1990 Recontre Beaucaire.

After the 1992 Olympics Zmeskal retired only to return to the US national team in 1998, and won a team and beam gold at a duel meet in 1999 against China. After an early-season injury in 2000, she retired for good. She later worked as a production assistant with NBC Sports. Zmeskal married Chris Burdette and they settled in Texas where they ran their own gymnastics training center, “EveryBody Fits.” Zmeskal-Burdette is a member of the US Gymnastics Hall of Fame.
