Sepp Ferstl, father of Josef Ferstl, came to prominence in 1978 when he became the second German alpine skier, after Luggi Leitner, to win the Hahnenkamm downhill at Kitzbühel. He dominated this race again the following year, and won his second of two downhill races during his career.
Ferstl also won two West German national titles, in the downhill in 1976, and giant slalom in 1977. At the 1978 World Championships, he won the silver medal in the Alpine combination. At the Olympics of 1976 and 1980, he did not finish among the top 10 in any event. Ferstl later owned a public carrier company.
