Root played with the US team through 1994, winning a gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, also adding a gold at the 1987 Pan American Games. He then played professionally in Italy and in beach volleyball.

After retiring from competition Root first worked for the US Olympic Committee as a program manager in Atlanta through 1997.
