Jenő Szántay studied at Budapest University, but after school he joined the Army with the Austro-10 Hussars, commanding the machine gun squadron. He also became a top fencer, mainly as a sabreur. He competed for both the Magyar Atlétikai Club (MAC) and the Péca Atlétikai Club (PAC). Szántay was a career military man and was killed early in World War I during a battle in Limanowa, Małopolskie, Poland.
