Jim Hardy began rowing in high school, helping Balboa High to the San Francisco city championship in 1940. He then served in the army medical corps during World War II, leaving as a second lieutenant in 1946, and matriculating at the University of California. Hardy graduated from Cal in 1949 with a degree in civil engineering, and made his career as a traffic engineer in California. Hardy rowed the six-oar for the Cal eight at the Olympics.
