Biografie

Ingrid Schmidt was a backstroke swimmer, winning the bronze medal with the Unified German 4x100 medley relay at the 1960 Roma Summer Games at the age of just 15. Four years later the relay team was disqualified in the final. In both Olympics she also reached the semi-finals of the 100 backstroke but failed to progress any further. In 1962 Schmidt won the European Championships with the East German medley relay team, setting a new world record 4:40.1, and subsequently the team was named Sports Team of the Year.

Domestically she set 14 East German records and won the national titles over 100 m in 1959-61 and 1963, and over 200 in 1963. By profession, she became a doctor, and moved legally to West Germany in 1984. She then worked as an evaluator in the Department of Supply in Rottweil.
