Hermann Smiel finished 76th in the 320 km individual road race at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, which was held as an individual time trial. This helped Germany finish sixth in the team road race in 1912, although he was not among the top four German finishers. Germany had all 11 team members finish the race, the only nation to do so. Smiel was the first Olympian from Cottbus. In 1912 he came in fourth in the race Berlin-Wien (Vienna) over 550 km. In 1923 he was one of the founders of a future classic cycling race Cottbus-Görlitz-Cottbus.
