Henry Harper was a member of the Gananoque Canoe Club when he was selected to represent Canada at the 1948 Summer Olympics. With partner George Covey, he finished seventh in the K-2 1000 and fourteenth in the K-2 10K, but did not start in either of the individual events. He competed actively through 1950 and then followed a career in law enforcement, first with his local constabulary and later with the Ontario Provincial Police. He was killed at the age of 28 while directing traffic in his home town, when a car struck him during a storm. In June 2014 a highway bridge near Gananoque was dedicated as the Cst. Henry J. Harper Memorial Bridge in his honour.
