Biografie

Geoffrey Mason attended Bowdoin College where he played football for four years and was the second best hammer thrower on the track team. The top hammer thrower at Bowdoin was Fred Tootell who would win an Olympic gold medal in that discipline, and later would name his son Geoffrey, after Geoffrey Mason. After graduation in 1923, Geoff Mason did graduate work in literature at the University of Freiburg in Germany While there he saw an ad in the Paris Herald which asked American athletes in Europe to come to St. Moritz and try out for the 1928 bobsled team. Mason did, made the team and won a gold medal in a sport in which his career was one month long – he never again slid after the Olympics. Mason returned to the United States and became a Latin and German teacher, first at Bowdoin, but primarily in secondary schools. He was also a coach, and at one time coached seven different sports.
