When he went up to Magdalen College, Oxford in October 1908 there was little doubt that Stanley Garton, who had been an outstanding member of the Eton crew, would win his blue that following spring. He rowed in the winning Oxford boat in 1909, 1910 and 1911, was in the Magdalen boat that won the Grand in 1910 and 1911 and, as a member of Leander scored a third win in the Grand in 1913. After leaving university, he maintained a close interest in the sport and coached the Oxford eight in 1925 and 1930. Stanley Garton’s daughter married Richard “Dickie” Burnell, the 1948 Olympic gold medallist, and their son, Peter, who was Garton’s grandson, rowed for Oxford in 1962.
