Biografie

Ángel Espinosa first came to international attention when he won the 1983 World Junior Championships as a junior welterweight, knocking out American Meldrick Taylor in the final. Because of the Soviet-led boycott Espinosa was unable to compete at the 1984 Olympics. In 1986 he won gold medals as light-middleweight at both the World Championships and the Central American and Caribbean Games, and he added another title at the 1987 Pan American Games. Espinosa also could not compete at the 1988 Seoul Olympics as Cuba again boycotted, in solidarity with North Korea, but he took a middleweight silver medal at the 1989 World Championships. At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Espinosa fought as a light-heavyweight but lost in the quarter-finals to Poland’s Wojciech Bartnik. In 2010 Espinosa escaped Cuba and settled in Miami. He began training boxers at the Hialeah School of Boxing, where he was found dead in the gym in April 2017.
