Wolfgang Schmitt from Mainz lost his first round bout as a lightweight at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics against Domingo Barrera from Spain. He qualified for the games by defeating the initial East German Olympic Champion Wolfgang Behrendt in the inter-national qualifiers. From 1961-64 and in 1966 and 1967 Schmitt was West German champion. In 1967 he retired and became a boxing coach, coaching among others Peter Hussing. He later worked for his home club BC Mainz, the Southwest German Boxing Association and the University of Mainz. In July 2017 Schmitt died after a long illness.
