Vladimir Cheboksarov took up wresting in 1965. Cheboksarov, who competed in Greco-Roman middleweight his entire career, made the Soviet national team in 1974 and first earned fame at the 1975 European Championships, winning a gold medal. At the 1976 European Championships, Cheboksarov won silver and then, at the 1976 Olympics, added another silver medal. Cheboksarov won the 1977 World title and last competed internationally at the 1978 Worlds, winning bronze. At the Soviet Championships, Cheboksarov captured only one title, in 1976. After finishing his sporting career in 1981, Cheboksarov worked as a wrestling coach with Dynamo Tyumen and also acted as a wrestling referee. From 1997-2004 he was president of the Siberian Greco-Roman Wrestling Federation. Since 1995, an annual junior Greco-Roman wrestling tournament in his honor has been held in Tyumen.
