Silvia Rieger, a 400 hurdler, came in eighth at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, after being eliminated in the heats four years earlier in Barcelona. Rieger competed at the Worlds in 1993, 1995 (sixth), and 1997, and was also at the World Cups in 1994 (second) and 1998. Her biggest moments came at the European Championships, taking the silver medal in 1994 behind Sally Gunnell, and the bronze medal in 1998, adding a gold medal with the 4x400 relay. Rieger also took part in several European Cups. She was German Champion in 1990, 1993, and 1996-99. She retired in 2001 due to Achilles’ tendon problems.

Rieger was then educated as a graduate sports coach in athletics by the Lower Saxony Athletics Association and coached at the Olympic Training Center in Hannover. She had formerly been a physiotherapist.

Personal Best: 400H – 54.22 (1998).
