Sean O’Neill played table tennis at the 1988 and 1992 Olympics for the United States. He also competed at the 1983, 1987, 1991, and 1995 Pan American Games, winning eight medals, including gold medals in mixed doubles in 1983 and 1991, with Insook Bhushan in 1983 and Diana Gee in 1991. O’Neill won 16 US senior titles, five in singles, five in doubles, and six in mixed doubles. He also won US age group titles in the U-11, 13, 15, 17, 21, and the Over-30 groups, and competed in five World Championships and was named USA Table Tennis Male Athlete of the Year five times. Competing in US Olympic Festivals from 1981-95, O’Neill won 18 titles and 27 medals.

After retiring from competition O’Neill became a coach, serving as USA Paralympic table tennis coach at the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Paralympics. He also coached in college, first at the University of Virginia, and then at Portland State University. He is a member of the George C. Marshall Hall of Fame (1998) and the USA Table Tennis Hall of Fame, inducted in 2007.
