Long and triple jumper Robert Hawkey was educated at Ryhope School in Co. Durham, where he gained many athletic honours. He left school, and joined the Metropolitan Police in London. He represented the Met at many athletics meetings, and in a match at Newport in 1937, set a new Welsh all-comers long jump record of 6.78. Before the outbreak of World War II, Hawkey returned north, and joined the Durham County Constabulary, and was third in the long jump at the 1939 National Police Championships. Also in 1939, Hawkey won the Northumberland and Durham long jump title, and was second in the triple jump (the hop, step and jump) at both the Northern, and County Championships.

Hawkey was the 1947 Northern triple jump champion, and was third in the AAAs. He retained his Northern title in Olympic year, and gained selection for the London Games. He was runner-up in the Inter-Counties triple jump for a second consecutive year in 1949.
