Reggie Jones grew up in New Jersey, and while he took some classes at Seton Hall University, Shaw University, and Jersey City College, he enrolled in the US Marines shortly after high school, winning several awards for his service. Jones started boxing at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba while stationed with the Marines. He won a bronze medal at the 1971 Pan American Games. He was a two-time Marines and Interservice Champion, and twice won the North Carolina Golden Gloves and North Carolina AAU titles.

Jones turned professional after the 1972 Olympics, winning his first bout in January 1974 with a TKO of Carlos Stevens. He fought as a pro through April 1982, and then retired after losing four of his last six bouts. He finished with a career professional of 16 wins, 9 losses, and 1 draw. He twice fought for the New Jersey middleweight title, but lost both fights. Jones later settled in Summit, New Jersey where he worked as a social worker with the New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS).
