Józef Bujak attended high school in the town of Nowy Targ and fought on the Russian and Italian front in World War I, where he was wounded but escaped from the hospital to his hometown Zakopane. In 1918, he joined the Polish Army and served as a training instructor of an alpine company. In 1920, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and was wounded a second time in the Polish-Soviet War. In 1921, he returned to his studies and completed a course for graduates at the Academy of Economics in Krakow. He worked as a clerk in Zakopane and later became head of the financial department. In World War II, he served in the rank of a captain, and after the war worked as head of department for the municipal council.

Bujak started skiing in high school and won his first junior race in 1913. In 1920, he claimed his first Polish Championship in the slalom. In 1925 he was Polish champion in the 30 km cross-country, and at 18km in 1926 and 1927. At the 1929 World Championships he was excluded when the medical examination showed indications of hepatitis.
