السيرة الذاتية

Gyula Kellner was born in Budapest as a child of a traditional family, with a typographer father. He started his sporting career in his school years, competing in wrestling, swimming, cycling, gymnastics, and weightlifting, although he later turned to athletics, first mainly in sprinting and walking, and later as a long-distance runner. He competed for MTK Budapest, and then BTC Budapest. Kellner finished third at the 1896 Athens Olympics in the marathon race, after the Greek Spyridon Belokas, who originally finished third, was disqualified for having covered part of the run in a car. This is, through 2016, the only Hungarian medal in the Olympic marathon.

Kellner competed for Szolnok MÁV SE. After his sporting career, he became co-owner and then managing director of the Kellner and Mohrlrüder Printing House. His son, Kornel Késmárki, was the best Hungarian jumper in the 1920s and competed at the 1928 Olympics.

Personal Best: Mar – 3-09:35 (1896).
