Kazakh Grigory Yegorov took up athletics in 1980 and was selected for the Soviet national team in 1985. During his career, which lasted until 2004, he won a 1988 Olympic bronze, a 1993 World Championship silver, and a 1990 European Championship silver. He also won golds at the 1987 and 1991 European Cup, 1989 European Indoor Championships, 1993 and 2003 Asian Championships, 2002 Asian Games and 2003 Afro-Asian Games, adding silvers at the 1989 and 1993 World Indoor Championships, 1989 European Indoor Championships, 1990 Goodwill Games, and 1994 Asian Games, and a bronze at the 2002 Asian Championships.
