Fritiof Svensson was a skilled technical wrestler who had his major breakthrough with the bronze medal in Antwerp, trailing only two wrestlers from Finland, the leading nation in Greco-Roman wrestling at the time, Heikko Kähkönen and Oskari Friman, who proved too strong for him. Two years later, when the World Championships were held in Stockholm before a home crowd, Svensson won the title with six straight victories. The final was a fierce fight against Estonian Eduard Pütsep and Svensson was ruled the winner by a small margin. He also won four Swedish championships from 1920-23. In 1924 Svensson had his second Olympic appearance but could not repeat his previous achievements, placing fifth.
