Chuck Leonard attended Indiana University, graduating in 1967, where he starred on the swim team. He was twice a collegiate All-American in swimming, but even then had started modern pentathlon, winning the 1967 US Junior title. He was US Champion in the modern pentathlon in 1970-72, also winning the CISM title in 1969, 1971, and 1972. Richards joined the US Army after college and competed at the 1972 Olympics out of Fort Sam Houston.

Richards later moved to Portland, Oregon where he opened a health club, the Cornell Club, which would later be renamed the Sunset Athletic Club. He also guided the Oregon Sports Academy bingo program which raised 1000s of dollars to support amateur athletics and club sports. He became President of the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame and in 2009 Richards was inducted into the Hall of Fame for his advocacy of sports and fitness.
