Charles Ruffell was an athlete of considerable versatility. At the AAA Championships, he was a finalist in the 880y in 1909 and again in 1910 when he also placed fourth in the mile. He placed in the first three in the AAA steeplechase four times (1912-14, 1920) and was the winner in 1913. After the war he won the Kinnaird 3 miles in 1920, and in 1923 he placed fifth in the AAA steeplechase. He died later in the year at only 35-years-old. Ruffell was also a notable cross-country runner, winning the National in 1914 and ran for England three times in the International (1910 – 9th, 1912 – 19th, 1914 – 23rd).

Personal Bests: Mile – 4:28.6 (1911); 3 miles – 14:39.0 (1913).
