Arne LJUNGQVIST

Arne Ljungqvist competed at the 1952 Olympics as a high jumper for Sweden. Ljungqvist was Swedish junior champion in the high jump in 1950, then runner-up as a senior in 1951, winning his only senior national title in 1952. He stopped athletics relatively early to pursue a medical career, studying and then becoming a professor at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, where he did research into the fields of renal and cardiovascular disease. He was rector at Karolinska from 1977-83, and chairman of pathology there from 1983-92. He has served as President of the Swedish Cancer Society and as Lord-in-Waiting to His Majesty, the King of Sweden.

Ljungqvist became known in the fight against doping in sport. He served on the IOC Medical Commission beginning in 1980, well before he became an IOC Member. He was President of the Swedish Sports Confederation from 1991-2001, and was a vice-president of the IAAF from 1981-2007, serving as its senior vice-president from 1999-2007. He became a board member of WADA when it was founded in 1999 and later became its vice-president. Elected to the IOC in 1994, Ljungqvist has served mostly on the Medical Commission, also serving as it chair.
