Ann Govednik swam the 200 breaststroke at the 1932 and 1936 Olympics. She swam in 1932 when she was still a student at Chisholm High School in Minnesota. Govednik won the US title in the 200 breaststroke in 1934. She later graduated from St. Cloud State University, and then taught swimming at Minnesota Duluth for four years. Govednik taught physical education and swimming at Duluth's Washington Junior High School for 17 years before retiring in 1975.

Govednik later married and became Ann Van Steinburg. In 1974, the Chisholm Junior High natatorium was re-dedicated as the Anne Govednik Pool. In 1982, she was inducted in the Minnesota Swimming Coaches Association Hall of Fame and in 1984 was inducted into the St. Cloud State Athletic Hall of Fame.
