Sarabjot Singh’s impressive medal cabinet includes gold medals at the World Championships, Asian Games and the ISSF World Cup. But his biggest dream - to finish on the Olympic podium - was finally fulfilled at Paris 2024.

Sarabjot’s Olympic debut campaign, however, began with a heartbreak. He missed out on a place in the men’s 10m air pistol individual final by a whisker. Despite finishing with the same points as the eighth-placed German shooter Robin Walter, Sarabjot was ranked ninth in the qualification round on the count of inner 10s.

But four days later, when another opportunity to finish on the Olympic podium arrived in the air pistol mixed team event, Sarabjot made no mistake. Alongside Manu Bhaker, Sarabjot defeated the Republic of Korea’s Lee Wonho and Oh Ye-jin in the bronze match to claim his first Olympic medal.

The journey from a village from Ambala to the Olympic podium in Paris had its hardships, but the young shooter fought his way through to become one of the select few Indians to win an Olympic medal.

Sarabjot Singh was born on September 30, 2001, in the Dheen village of Ambala, Haryana. He is the son of Jatinder Singh, a farmer and Hardeep Kaur, a homemaker. He has one younger brother.

Sarabjot Singh’s love for shooting started at the age of 13 when he saw some kids wielding air guns at a makeshift range during a summer camp. Although football was the first sport he practised, his heart quickly turned towards shooting at the AR Academy of Shooting Sports in Ambala.

Shooting was an expensive sport to pursue professionally and his father Jitender Singh remained reluctant due to the expenses incurred. However, Jitender Singh finally agreed to let his son pursue this dream after months of contemplation.

Sarabjot Singh started training under coach Abhishek Rana in 2016. A former shooter, Abhishek Rana turned to coaching and Sarabjot was one of his first students.

“The medals that I couldn’t win for myself at a few international events, Sarabjot did and hung them up at my office,” said Abhishek Rana in an interview with Sportstar.

Sarabjot Singh’s first major success came in 2019 when he won a gold medal at the ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl and it started a spree of medals at the junior level.

He claimed two gold medals at the ISSF Junior World Championships 2021 in Lima in the team and mixed events. He followed it up with three more medals at the ISSF Junior World Cup 2022 in Germany - a gold in the 10m air pistol team event and a silver each in the individual and mixed events.

In 2023, Sarabjot Singh started to bring in results at a senior level too. At the ISSF World Cup in Bhopal, he won the gold medal in the individual event and later at the Baku World Cup, clinched another gold in the mixed team event.

At the Asian Games in Hangzhou, later in the year, he bagged two more medals - a gold in the men’s team event and a silver, on his birthday, in the mixed team event.

He capped off the year with a bronze medal in the 10m air pistol individual event at the Asian Championships in Changwon, the Republic of Korea. The result also earned him an Olympic quota to feature at Paris 2024.

Nicknamed Sabby, Sarabjot Singh has been a student of DAV College, Chandigarh. He later graduated in 2023 with a Bachelor's degree in arts from Panjab University.
