Although a talented athlete, Richard Corts retired from competition in 1930, and undertook professional training in Helsinki for two years, where he prepared himself to take over his father's knife factory, Josua Corts in Remscheid.

Richard Corts was German Champion over 100 m in 1925 and 1928 and also won the British AAA Championships over 100 yards in 1926. He set a European record for 100 metres in 1925 (10.5) and equaled the world record in in the 100 in 1928 (10.4), also running on world record setting 4×100 m relay teams in 1928 (40.8) and in 1925 in the 5×100 m relay (53.5). In Amsterdam 1928 he was eliminated in the semifinals over 100 metres, but won the silver medal with the sprint relay together with Georg Lammers, Hubert Houben and Helmut Körnig. Corts committed suicide at the age of 69.
