Renate Boy was born in East Prussia as Garisch-Culmberger and was dispersed to Thuringia during World War II, and from there to Rügen. The name of her noble family was originally from Alsace and was called Garisch von Culmberger. Renate Boy later married East German wrestler Nils Boy. She started at the 1960 (finishing sixth) and 1964 (silver medal) Olympics under her maiden name for the combined German team and in 1968 (placing fifth) under the name of her husband for the East German team. She was in 1961 the first German woman to put the shot over 17 meters (17.18).

By profession she was an educated goods dispatcher and later a shift forewoman in a fish combine at Rostock. In her youth she was an avid handball player. At the European Championships she won a shot put silver medal in 1962 and placed fifth seven years later. She also became East German Champion in 1961-65 and 1967, and was indoor champion in 1964 and 1965. In 1964 she set her lone world record putting the shot to 17.19 in an indoor competition. Her trainers were Emil Hirschfeld and then Karl-Heinz Bauersfeld.
