个人信息

After 8 years on the U.S. Swimming National Team, Nancy Hogshead won three gold medals and a silver at the 1984 Olympics. Her first event, the 100 meters freestyle, Hogshead tied with Carrie Steinseifer, the first tie in Olympic history. She anchored two relays for more gold medals, and earned a silver medal in the 200 Individual Medley, next to the great Tracy Caulkins.

In the 200 butterfly, Hogshead missed a medal by .07, when she suffered bronchial spasm near the end of the race, which led to a diagnosis of exercise induced asthma.

During her career, swam for Duke University, earning the first women’s swim scholarship at a school not known as a swimming power, thanks to Title IX.

Hogshead graduated from Duke in 1986 and then went on to Georgetown University Law School. She became a spokesperson for the American Lung Association, writing a book and advocating for policies to help people with asthma.

While in college she had been a summer intern for the Women’s Sport Foundation and became a member of its Board of Trustees from 1987-93 and served as its 4th President in 1993. She has become an important spokesperson for gender equity in sports.
