Johnny Baldwin’s top victories as an amateur came in the Michigan AAU championships in 1966 and 1968. He also was a runner-up in the National AAU in 1968. In that year he went to the semifinals of the Olympics where he lost a close decision to Rolando Garbey of Cuba. Baldwin began fighting as a pro in 1970 and ran up a good record. Through 1976, in 32 fights as a middleweight he lost only once, that to Marvelous Marvin Hagler, the future middleweight champ, by a 10-round decision. Inexplicably he was never given a title shot. He finished his career with a record of 32 wins, 5 losses and 1 no-contest.
