Learning to swim at age six, Pang Jiaying has become a consistent competitor in the Chinese freestyle relay teams. Her top event is the 200 freestyle, and she has medaled numerous times in the 4 x 200 freestyle relay. She first did so at the 2003 Worlds (bronze), repeating in 2005 (bronze), 2009 (gold) and 2011 (bronze), as well as at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics (silver on both occasions), and during the World Short-Course Championships (gold in 2010, silver in 2006). In addition, she has won an Olympic bronze in the 4 x 100 free relay (2008). That same year, she won her only international individual medal, coming third in the final of the 200 metre freestyle. She was unlucky in the individual 100 free, clocking the fastest time in the semi-finals (53.49) before being disqualified for a false start. Pang was also successful at the 2006 Asian Games, where she claimed four golds (including an individual one over 200 metres) and two silvers.
