Ingo Buding was born in Romania, belonging to the ethnic group of the Banat Swabians. After World War II, he and his family were displaced to Germany, from which they emigrated to Argentina in 1948. The Argentine President Juan Peron hired his father as state tennis coach. Ingo Buding won the French Boys’ singles titles in 1959-60 and later made the quarter-finals of the French Championships in 1965, his best Grand Slam result. His other quarter-final appearance at a Grand Slam came in mixed doubles at the 1962 Australian Championship. Buding played Davis Cup for Germany from 1961-70, winning 36 of 52 rubbers, with a 26-11 record in singles. He was 1965 German doubles champion, with Christian Kuhnke, Buding’s sister, Edda, was also a top tennis player who played in the 1968 Olympic demonstration tournament. Ingo Buding was honored with the DTB Golden Badge of Honour and in 1970 received the )Silver Laurel Leaf) from the President of Germany.
