High jumper Henry Lauterbach finished an unfortunate fourth at the 1980 Moskva Olympics, after failing to make the final at the 1976 Olympics. At the 1978 European Championships Lauterbach also placed fourth, and he was fifth at the 1979 European Indoors. After the 1980 Games he switched to the long jump, winning the 1982 European Indoors. Lauterbach won two East German Championships, in the 1979 indoor high jump and the 1982 indoor long jump.
Lauterbach was married to non-Olympian sprinter Marion Böhmer. By profession he was educated as a sports teacher and coach. In GDR documents on doping, which became public after reunification, his name was found among the list of doped athletes. His brother Wolfram was also a nationally successful long jumper.
