Ellsworth “Spider” Webb won the NCAA light-middleweight title in 1951-52 while a student at Idaho State University. After the 1952 Olympics, Webb turned professional in July 1953. He won his first two fights, before losing to Jimmy Elby on points in Chicago. Webb then won his next 20 bouts, through April 1957, and became one of the world’s top middleweights. In December 1959 Webb fought Gene Fullmer for the world middleweight crown, but lost on a decision after 15 rounds. He fought twice more, losing in April 1961 to Dick Tiger in his final fight. Webb ended his professional career with a record of 34 wins and 6 losses. In 1980 he was inducted into the Idaho State University Sports Hall of Fame
