Bruce Furniss was the younger of two extremely talented brothers from Southern Cal. Bruce emerged as a top-class swimmer in 1975 when he finished second in the 200m and 400m freestyle and won a gold medal in the relay at the World Championships. He also set his first world record that year when he posted a new best for the 200m freestyle twice in one day during June. He made a further improvement in August and two days later deprived his brother of the world 200m IM record. At the Olympics, Furniss won both his gold medals with new world records. He won nine AAU titles and six NCAA championships during his career. Furniss later worked in marketing and public relations. He also did public speaking and became a columnist for Swimming World magazine.
