Arthur ROTHROCK

Capt. Arthur Rothrock of the US Army’s 29th Infantry won the US free rifle championship in 1908. At the 1920 Olympics, he was edged for the smallbore standing title by teammate Larry Nuesslein, with another American, Dennis Fenton, in third. Using those scores for the team event, the US easily won the team gold medal in smallbore rifle, standing position. In 1921 Rothrock also won the world title with the US team in the free rifle, three positions. Rothrock was a graduate of Ohio Northern University and served with the US Army during World War I as an instructor at the Camp Perry shooting school. Rothrock died at the age of 52, just days before he was to retire with the rank of captain. He was buried at the Rock Island National Cemetery in Illinois.
